Orroroo Main Street Upgrade Project

Published 31st January 2025

The District Council of Orroroo Carrieton has secured $900,000 in funding through the Growing Regions Program – Round 2 to implement key upgrades along Second Street, between Fourth and Fifth Streets. The $1.3 million project will be co-funded, with the remaining balance contributed by Council.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, the Hon. Catherine King, announced the funding yesterday, confirming the success of Council’s grant application.

Mayor Grant Chapman welcomed the announcement, highlighting the importance of the project for the town’s future.

“Council has worked hard over the past 12 to 18 months to develop a practical and achievable Main Street Plan, and we moved quickly to secure funding to bring it to life,” Mayor Chapman said.

“Our focus has always been on delivering real and tangible improvements, ensuring the plan meets the needs of our community. This funding allows us to move forward with much-needed upgrades that will improve accessibility, safety, and the overall vibrancy of the town.”

The project will address key challenges in the main street precinct, particularly improving connectivity and accessibility for those with restricted mobility. Planned works include:

*  New footpath surfaces for safer and more accessible pedestrian movement

*  Improved road safety measures

*  Enhanced pedestrian crossings for better connectivity

*  Better business access through upgraded shopfront approaches

*  Wider footpaths to support outdoor dining and public seating

*  Upgraded parking, including compliant Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) spaces

*  Improved stormwater management to enhance infrastructure resilience

Council is committed to working closely with local businesses and the community to ensure the project is delivered with minimal disruption and maximum benefit.

“Once completed, these upgrades will enhance the appeal of our main street, benefiting both residents and visitors,” Mayor Chapman said. “This investment will help local businesses by attracting more people to the town, which is especially important during challenging economic times.”

The community will be kept informed and engaged as Council prepares for the project’s next steps in the coming months.
