Development & Health

Planning and development of the local area, and public environmental health, are key responsibilities of local government. The Local Government Act 1999 requires the District Council of Orroroo Carrieton to plan at the local and regional level for the development and future requirements of our area.

The Development & Health section of the District Council of Orroroo Carrieton's website provides information about:

  • undertaking development within The Flinders Ranges Council region;
  • Public & Environmental Health within the Council region.

It also provides information about major projects which will strategically support the development of services and facilities for the community and enhance the environmental sustainability of the area.

Development Services

The range of activities that constitute 'development' is defined in the Development Act 1993 and generally includes building work, a change in the use of land and the division of land.

The District Council of Orroroo Carrieton's Development Services unit manages applications for development while working closely with the community, local industry planners and developers. Council encourages all "developers" (ratepayers) to seek private certification for building rules consent.

It provides best-practice administration of the Development Act 1993 and the Liqour Licence Act 1997 in accordance with the community's emerging needs and expectations.

Provision of Public and Environmental Health Services

Public and Environmental Health encompasses public health and the natural and built systems in which we live. The Environmental Health Officer can assist you with advice on a variety of public and environmental health issues such as food safety, infectious diseases, pest control, housing, waste disposal, insanitary conditions, hazardous substances, pollution, local natural systems, effluent reuse, and many other aspects within the Council area.

Council's environmental health program includes regular visits to various businesses and establishments to ensure that any risks to the community are managed in an acceptable manner. Council monitors public swimming and spa pools, cooling towers, food outlets, hairdressing and beauty salons and natural systems for vector and nuisance control.
