Welcome to the District Council of Orroroo Carrieton and surrounding districts.
Half Marathon 2016
In 2016 the Orroroo Half Marathon committee will be organising their 9th event on Sunday 20th March 2016.
The day consists of three distances (21K, 10K and 5K) which can be either run or walked, and all are timed races. The course starts adjacent to the Orroroo Town Hall and competitors run from there up Fourth Street past the hospital onto the Price Maurice Road towards Pekina. Each distance has a turnaround point at their half way mark, where the runners and walkers return to the Start / Finish line at the Town Hall.
Races start at 8am, (21K Walk); 9am (21K run); 9:15am (10K event) and 9:30am (5K event). All events are finished by 11.30am, with a prize presentation finishing by about midday, when the main street opens for traffic again.
Participants include long distance road runners from interstate and around South Australia, and family groups enjoying a pleasant mornings run or walk. Participation rates reached 160 in 2015, indicating increasing registrations from outside the area.
Drink stations are placed every 2.5Km along the course, and there is a radio communication equipped vehicle patrolling the road if required for support or rescue. The road is not closed to normal traffic, so running road rules are important for the safety of all competitors. St John First Aid facilities are available if required.
Many of the local businesses are open on the Sunday morning for sale of coffee, snacks, meals and gifts. The Orroroo Lions Club provide a BBQ all morning for visitors and locals.
The proceeds go to the Orroroo Community Gym and other community groups, and promotes the area of Orroroo as a great tourist destination.
